Signature Member of Watercolor Society of North Carolina

Doug Ghering / Comment on this

Happy news from the studio, this fall at the Watercolor Society of North Carolina annual meeting I was awarded signature membership. What does that mean, well for a watercolor artist it’s pretty cool it means that I can use the initials “WSNC” after my name, Doug Ghering WSNC. So how does an artist get signature membership well for the Watercolor Society of North Carolina you have to be accepted in three juried shows. I did this in three years getting in the annual juried exhibition three years in a row 2022, 2023, 2024. The next steps is to get signature membership in Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor Society, American Watercolor Society. I better get busy.

Thank you for your time, be kind to each other and Be Creative.

End of Summer: Watercolor Exhbitions and Teaching Watercolor

Doug Ghering / Comment on this

2024 Watercolor Exhibitions

I was very pleased to be accepted into two juried watercolor exhibitions this year. My painting “Relaxing on the River” was accepted to the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society 2024 International Juried Exhibition. This was painted from a photo I took at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, Florida. The exhibition just closed on September 15 at a gallery in Lancaster, PA. My painting “Sawmill at Mabry Mill” was accepted into the Watercolor Society of North Carolina 2024 Juried exhibition at The Art Gallery at Congdon Yard, High Point, NC. This exhibition runs until October 31, 2024. This painting is of the sawmill located on Blue Ridge Parkway at Mabry Mill. Since exhibition was close I was able to attend the opening reception and will attend the award reception at end of September. The watercolors in these shows are wonderful it’s exciting to see the work of these talented artists produced. If you are in the High Point area stop in the gallery, it’s a wonderful gallery.

Watercolor Workshop Teaching

A wonderful way to close out the summer by teaching watercolor over the Labor Day weekend at the John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. I had a wonderful class of 10 student most were beginners all were eager to paint and learn. They watched my demonstration and created some beautiful watercolors. The folk school is located in the North Carolina mountains and its campus is beautiful. I think it’s important to pass on knowledge and I want to do more teaching in the future. I am hoping to add some workshops to my 2025 schedule so keep checking back for workshop news.

What’s Next? Well I plan on doing a couple of holiday paintings, explore new gallery options and create some new paintings.

Watercolor sketchbook

Doug Ghering / Comment on this

One of my favorite things to do is to paint in my watercolor sketchbook. My sketchbook is 8 in x 8 in a great size for watercolor studies and just fun little paintings. The paper is watercolor paper it is not as thick as my regular professional paper I use but it works well. I like to travel with my sketchbook and if I get the chance I paint plein air ( French for on location). It you go to my Facebook page you can see a video of my latest completed sketchbook, Doug Ghering Art
